What is the meaning of organic – organic means products that aren’t genetically modified, have no pesticides or artificial fertilizers, and are grown in their natural form. What is the meaning of eco-friendly – eco-friendly means goods and services considered to inflict minimal harm on the environment.

The best weddings, in my professional option, are eco- friendly weddings. Not only are you helping the environment, you are inspiring your guests to make lifestyle changes. Observing an eco-friendly lifestyle has proven to be healthy way of life, so why not share this with those you love by hosting an eco-friendly wedding.

Wedding Venue:

When selecting a venue, choose one that is within close driving distance between you and your guests. Consider an outdoor venue, as this will reduce power for air conditioning and lighting. Consider hosting both the ceremony and reception at the same location thus, reducing carbon emissions. Finally, choose a venue that has eco-friendly policies and procedures in place.

Wedding Stationery:

For your wedding stationery, consider using tree-free or recycled paper with soy-based ink. If hosting an informal event, consider using e-vites and finally, word of mouth.

Menu Selection:

Organic is key! Many catering companies are now offering a wide selection of organic menus to choose from. Consider using a caterer whose supplies are organic and locally grown.

Wedding Cake:

Again, organic is key! The wedding cake is usually front-and-center at the reception. Order a wedding cake that is organically made with locally grown ingredients. Finally, consider individual organic blueberry pies instead of cake.

Wedding Attire:

We are now seeing a variety of eco- friendly wedding dresses on the market; consider purchasing a dress that is made with eco-friendly fabric like hemp, silk and organic cotton. Consider purchasing a vintage, second hand or borrowed dress. Bridesmaids dresses are also available in the same materials. The same can be said for the Groom and groomsmen. When in doubt use a designer who is able to source organic, fair-trade and natural materials with no environmentally harmful chemicals.

Wedding flowers / Décor:

Décor sets the ambiance of your event. Most florists now offer organic flowers. Consider using organic, in-season flowers that are locally grown. Along with flowers, bamboo can be used to enhance the décor. Consider using candles made of bee’s wax or soybean wax. Ask your florist to use recycled containers for floral arrangements. Finally, consider using silk flowers silk flowers can be reused several times and can be given to your bridal party as a keepsake. Floral keepsakes can be used as décor for an office, living room etc. Silk flowers are truly reusable. RAD Event Production Inc. offers custom designed silk wedding bouquets and centerpieces.  Transportation:

Consider using a hybrid limo to transport the bridal party, also consider a horse and carriage. Encourage your guests to car pool. Finally, consider providing shuttle service to transport your guests to and from the wedding.

Photography/Videography:

Consider using digital photography and videography, as this will eliminates the use of film, and the chemicals used to develop film. Ask that your images be copied on to CD and or request proofs online. The same can be done for your wedding video.

Entertainment:

Consider using entertainment in close proximity to the wedding. Also, consider acoustic musicians if possible, this will cut down on electricity.

 Wedding Favors:

Consider the following as favors: Seeds in a recycled package, as they can be planted in remembrance of your special day. Consider soy candles and or soy-based soaps that can be enjoyed for months to come, potted flowers, or consider having your guests give to your favorite charity in lieu of giving gifts.

Wedding Rings:

The wedding rings symbolize your union; it has no end and no beginning. When selecting a ring consider using an antique or vintage ring. If you prefer diamond, make sure the diamond is “conflict free”.

Wedding make-up

Again organic is key! Today we have organic make-up products. Products that’s will not block your pores. Remember make-up that is considered 100% natural does not mean organic make-up. Check with your local beauty consultant to make sure that his or her products are organic.

Incorporating these suggestions can help your efforts to save our planet while achieving the status of an eco-friendly, savvy wedding. Incorporating these elements is what will make your wedding great.
